Every purchase not only makes my heart jump for joy but also gives a gift of joy to children in need!
This sample is for the medium sized bag. It’s a quick and satisfying project and the mesh offers a medium level of stretch. Using a cotton or cotton/linen blend yarn gives it really good strength and durability meaning your produce bag will have a good long life. Hooray for re-using and not needing plastic bags!
Some links below are affiliate, meaning I may make a small commission if you make a purchase, but this is at no cost to you.
This free sample is written in UK terms with US stitch translations below.

NOTES
- In the pattern below, the number in brackets is how many stitches each row should have.
- Pattern uses shorthand, where “2 dc” means to work a double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches and “dc2” means to work 2 double crochets in the next stitch.
- This bag is worked in a continuous spiral, meaning there’s no joining of rows.
- Detailed step by step pictures and linked video support are provided in the PDF of this pattern, available in US or UK terms, which you can purchase here. The PDF of this pattern also has instructions to make two other sizes! You can also purchase the PDF on Etsy here or on Ravelry here.
PATTERN
Foundation: Chain 40 (40)
Row 1: 39 dc into each back bump across, dc3 into last back bump » pm in first dc (42)
Row 2: working along the other side of the foundation chain, 39 dc*, dc3 into last stitch (42)
* The first of these is in the same space as the dc3, so there will be a total of 4 dc in this space. You may find it helpful for counting to pm in this first stitch.
Each row is now a complete circle.
Row 3: Ch1 – this is to gain height, it does not count as a stitch. (tr, ch2, sk2) x 13, (tr, ch2, sk1) x 2, (tr, ch2, sk2) x 12, (tr, ch2, sk1) x 2, tr in last stitch. (88)
Row 4: Ch2, tr in top of first tr of previous row. (Ch2, sk2, tr) all the way around, working each tr into top of the tr in the row below. (90)
Row 5 – 24: Repeat row 4
Row 25: (Ch1, tr in chain space, ch1, tr in next chain space, ch1 tr in top of next tr) x15. (90)
Row 26: 89 htr, dc in last. (90)
Finish: Fasten off + securely weave in end. Weave string around trebles from row 25, working in front, then behind the stitches all the way around. Extend the bag to its widest open state, and cut the string so each end is several inches long. Securely tie the two ends together.
